Expansion of a Process Water Filtration Plant for the Paper Industry

Customer: Paper industry
Location: Czech Republic
Goal: Reconstruction and expansion of a process water filtration plant in a paper production facility. Installation of a sand filtration system with a capacity of up to 700 m³/h

Expansion of the Process Water Filtration Plant

The paper production facility required an increase in the capacity of its process water treatment technology. Therefore, ENVITES designed and delivered an expansion of the filtration plant, including modernization of related technological units.

The new technology made it possible to increase the filtration capacity to 700 m³/h and ensure stable operation of the water treatment system.

Customer Requirements

The paper production facility required an increase in the capacity of its process water treatment technology. The existing filtration plant was no longer sufficient to meet the growing production demands, and it was necessary to increase its performance while maintaining reliable operation.

The objective of the project was to increase the capacity of the filtration plant by 400 m³/h and to modernize the related technological units. The total capacity of the clarification and filtration technology was designed for 700 m³/h.

The project scope also included modernization of the raw water pumping station, modifications of process piping, and the implementation of a measurement and control system.

Initial Situation

The original water treatment technology had been designed for a lower capacity. With the gradual expansion of production, it became necessary to increase the capacity of the filtration section and simultaneously modernize several technological units.

Therefore, the filtration plant had to be expanded, its performance increased, and the raw water supply adjusted to ensure stable operation of the entire system.

Proposed Solution

ENVITES designed a technological solution including modernization of the raw water supply, reconstruction of the clarifiers and expansion of the filtration plant.

The technology was designed to ensure reliable operation at increased water flow rates while enabling efficient filtration of process water used in paper production.

The main technological measures included:

  • modernization of the raw water pumping station
  • reconstruction of clarifiers
  • installation of a new pressure sand filtration system
  • installation of additional pumping equipment and piping
  • implementation of a measurement and control system.

Technology Supply

Raw Water Intake

New mechanical screens were installed at the river water intake, and the pumping sump was modernized with submersible pumps with a capacity of 550 m³/h.

Clarifier Reconstruction

The existing tanks were upgraded by installing new flocculation mixers and pipeline coagulant mixers. These modifications made it possible to increase the performance of the water clarification process.

Sand Filtration

The core part of the project consisted of installing a new sand filtration station including:

  • 4 pressure sand filters with a diameter of 3000 mm
  • filtration media consisting of anthracite and quartz sand
  • complete filtration piping system
  • filtration water pumps with a capacity of 450 m³/h
  • backwash water pumps
  • air blower for filter backwashing.

The filters were designed in accordance with the technical concept of the filtration equipment previously installed at this filtration station.

Electrical System and Instrumentation & Control

The supply also included a measurement and control system comprising:

  • raw water flow measurement
  • filtration and backwash water flow measurement
  • differential pressure measurement on filters
  • automatic control of filtration and backwashing cycles.

Project Implementation

The project included preparation of project documentation, supply of technological equipment, installation of the technology and commissioning of the system.

Implementation also included individual and integrated testing, trial operation and operator training.

Project Benefits

The expansion of the filtration plant brought several operational benefits to the customer:

  • increased filtration plant capacity
  • stable operation of the water treatment technology
  • modernization of key technological units
  • improved efficiency of process water filtration
  • creation of capacity reserve for future production development.

The expanded filtration plant ensures a reliable supply of treated process water for the paper production process.
