Treatment of wastewater from manufacturing of concrete products

Customer: Concrete products manufacturer
Location: Czech Republic
Goal: Implementation of a system for efficient treatment of sludge generated during the production of concrete components, including thickening, homogenization, and dewatering processes, with the goal of minimizing waste volumes and reducing disposal costs.

1. Initial Conditions – Sludge from concrete recycling and wash water

In the production of concrete elements, sludge is produced from wash water and the recycling of residual concrete. This sludge is characterized by fine inorganic particles, low organic content, high abrasiveness, and fluctuating hydraulic properties. The customer required a solution capable of processing approximately 11 m³ of thickened sludge per week, with an average dry solids concentration of 200 kg/m³, while ensuring minimal operator intervention.

2. Solution – Technology supplied by ENVITES

ENVITES engineered and supplied a compact sludge treatment system consisting of the following components:
• A 2.3 m³ homogenization tank equipped with an agitator to maintain sludge suspension and ensure uniform feed to downstream equipment.
• An automated sludge pump for transferring sludge from the collection pit to the dewatering unit.
• A K470/15 chamber filter press – a robust dewatering unit sized for small-scale industrial operations, delivering high cake solids content with low polymer consumption and reduced wash water requirements.
• A structural steel skid designed to accommodate the system within the spatial constraints of the facility.
• A screw conveyor for the transport of dewatered sludge cake to a designated disposal container.

3. Results

• Reduction of sludge volume by more than 85% through efficient mechanical dewatering.
• Low operational costs and simplified handling due to fully automated filter press operation.
• Enhanced workplace hygiene and safety conditions.
• Potential for reuse of clarified water within the plant’s process water loop.

4. Conclusion

The integration of the ENVITES sludge treatment system resulted in significant improvements in sludge and process water management at the concrete production facility. The client benefited from a customized, cost-effective solution that improved operational cleanliness and reduced environmental impact
